Course overview
This online course provides the Texas Private Security Program-approved curriculum for commissioned security officers (Armed).

It covers best practices in verbal and written communication, incident scene security, situational awareness, use of force, conflict resolution, and introduces defensive tactics, handcuffing, and the use of weapons and firearms.

In Person - Part 2 is required

Please note that your agency’s departmental policy may take precedence over the practices taught in this course.

Course Information

Course Completion Requirements

Participants must provide information for all required fields, including their U.S. citizenship/permanent resident information, in addition to meeting all other attendance and course completion requirements. If this information is not provided, the participant will be considered incomplete and will not receive a certificate of completion.

  • The mandatory completion/duration period for this eCourse is 90 days from the registration date.
  • Participants will have three attempts to pass the final examination.
  • To complete this course, you are required to have a computer with internet access.
  • Participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end-of-course exam.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  1. Recognize the statutes and administrative rules that are relevant and required for commissioned security officers.
  2. Identify essential elements for effective verbal and written communication.
  3. Explain the job duties of a security officer at an incident scene.
  4. Recognize the benefits of situational awareness.
  5. Understand how to properly use force as a security officer.
  6. Learn methods for resolving conflict effectively.
  7. Familiarize yourself with the basics of defensive tactics.
  8. Describe the proper circumstances and techniques for using handcuffs.
  9. Recognize the types and appropriate uses of intermediate weapons.
  10. Demonstrate the ability to handle, clean, and store firearms appropriately.

  • Please allow 48-72 business hours for your PSP-30 certificate to be emailed to you. The one you see on your student portal upon course completion is not the official PSP-30 certificate.
  • The Private Security Level III course offering does not include the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) for licensing purposes per 1702.163.
  • The DPS candidate must seek the MMPI separately from their course completion with Learn TX Security.
  • Successful completion of this course provides certification that you have met the classroom/online training requirements for application to the TOPS database as an “Armed Registration – Commissioned Security Officer.” DPS requires the MMPI and Federal Criminal History Background Check to complete the application process. You must apply for your license with DPS and meet all application requirements to be approved by DPS and receive your license number before initiating any security work (paid or unpaid).
